Quiet trading is becoming apparent on the last trading day of the current year on the US stock exchanges. the Oil prices gave in on New Year’s Eve. On Friday, a barrel (159 liters) of North Sea Brent cost 78.89 US dollars. That was 64 cents less than the day before. The price of a barrel of American West Texas Intermediate (WTI) fell 69 cents to $ 76.30.

The trade is still determined by the Uncertainty about the effects of the omicron variant of the corona virus. The rapid spread of the variant speaks for falling oil prices, while the apparently lower disease burden speaks for rising prices. The trade shortly before the end of the year is, however, not very meaningful. Many investors have already withdrawn from the market.

In the full year 2021 have oil prices until now significantly increased. It amounts to the largest increase since 2009. The WTI price rose by around 60 percent over the course of the year. The prices were supported by the vaccinations against the corona virus. In this way, restrictions on travel could be lifted. This supported the demand for crude oil. In addition, the oil cartel Opec + has been reluctant to expand its funding.
