Still complaints after the first wave: ‘My thinking level is sometimes still at 50 percent’

The latter also bothered Jochem (34). He had all kinds of corona complaints in the spring, but could not be tested then. “My thinking level is sometimes still at 50 percent, conversations can be very difficult. It makes me not sharp, it takes a long time to find my words, cannot finish sentences. It is a very strange sensation.”

Jochem’s living group companion Nanda (39) was unable to speak properly for another reason: because of the anxiety. She found that one of the most difficult aspects of her illness, she says. “I needed support from my environment while in quarantine, but in this difficult time I was barely able to talk to my loved ones.”

Fragile balance

Nanda is still being treated by a physiotherapist and has applied for an extension. If her pulmonologist does not give her a referral, she does not yet know whether she will continue with it. “My physiotherapist says that to build strength, it is necessary to go twice a week. If it is not reimbursed, the costs will increase considerably.” She hopes she can continue the treatments. “Because of the fragile balance between sufficient load to recover and overload, which causes me to relapse.”

After some rest, Esther continues with strength training in the training room. She and physiotherapist Ellen keep an eye out that she does not exert too much. Then she leaves, on an electric bicycle. Because although she lives nearby, walking or cycling is still too much for the time being.
