Still Annoyed, German Chancellor Sends Someone Else When Invited Zelensky

Berlin

Chancellor German Olaf Scholz is still reluctant to visit Kiev even after the President Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky invited him and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The invitation was delivered three weeks after the German president refused to come by Kiev.

Reported from AFPFriday (6/5/2022), a source from the German presidential office said Zelensky made the invitation during a phone call with Steinmeier.

During the talks, ‘the aggravation of the past has been cleared’ and Steinmeier expressed ‘solidarity, respect and support’ for Ukraine.

Scholz, speaking late Thursday at a news conference, called the phone call a ‘good thing’ that the two presidents had spoken to each other.

He was then asked if he accepted Zelensky’s invitation. What the answer?

“The result of the talks (with the German president) is that the foreign minister will soon be in Ukraine,” he said.

A diplomatic row has rumbled between the two countries since Steinmeier admitted last month that he had offered to visit but was ‘unwanted in Kiev’.

Scholz has voiced irritation at the insults and recently said the incident ‘prevented’ him from visiting Kiev.

On Wednesday (4/5), he said Kiev should ‘make its own contribution’ to repairing relations with Steinmeier.

Steinmeier and Scholz are Social Democratic (SPD) politicians who have for years pushed for closer ties with Russia — including the energy ties that make Germany so dependent on Russian gas.
