Novak Djokovic ruled on Court Philippe Chatrier and with a 5-4 lead in the third set, the Serbian received a match ball. But Stefanos Tsitsipas refused to throw the towel and actually forced a fifth set.
In that fifth set, the Greek powerhouse was physically exhausted. Djokovic smelled blood, didn’t give Tsitsipas a moment’s rest and pushed on. After almost 4 hours, Djokovic finished it: 6-3, 6 * 2, 5-7, 4-6, 6-1.
“I have to congratulate Stefanos on his match,” said Djokovic. “I may have seemed calm, but inside that was not the case. In the final Nadal is the favorite, we end up playing in his backyard. Rafael has already won so many titles here, but in 2015 I was able to beat him in the quarter-finals.”
