Steam bans developers from promoting other platforms in community hubs – news

Valve has updated the FAQ to its “Steamworks” documentation. It has recently been reported that developers can no longer use the Steam community space to promote other versions of their games available on other platforms.

On Steam, each product has its own “community hub”. A place that brings together discussions, videos, screenshots and user reviews. It’s also a convenient way for developers to let players know about upcoming updates or just a game’s release.

As reported GamesIndustry, here is what we can now read in response to the question “can I use the Steam community space to inform users about non-Steam versions of my game?” in this FAQ :

In the game you offer on Steam and in your communications on Steam, you should only promote the Steam version and its availability on Steam, not on other distribution platforms. This applies to both full games and fixes that modify the existing version.

Valve has not commented on this policy change. We imagine this is mainly about mentioning and redirecting to competing PC gaming platforms, such as GOG, Origin, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and Uplay.
