State of Zoonoses 2022: Bird Flu Outbreak and V-MRSA Concerns in the Netherlands

In 2022, there was bird flu in the Netherlands all year round. 76 poultry farms became infected with the virus. Many wild birds and various wild mammals also became infected. This is evident from the State of Zoonoses 2022, a report by the RIVM and the NVWA. They indicate how often zoonoses occur in the Netherlands and what the most common diseases are.

The most notable zoonotic disease outbreak of 2022 was bird flu. Just like in 2021, the virus continued to circulate among poultry and wild birds in the Netherlands all year long. Various wild mammals such as foxes and polecats also became infected. In the Netherlands, people did not become infected with the virus.

V-MRSA is a MRSA type related to farm animals and mainly occurs in people who have a lot of contact with animals. In recent years there has been an increase in v-MRSA among people who indicate that they have no contact with animals. That is why RIVM is conducting research into this together with partner institutes. Since 2018, a different farm animal has been examined every year. The State of Zoonoses pays attention to the results of this research.

Together with the NVWA, among others, RIVM monitors diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans in order to be able to intervene quickly and keep outbreaks under control. The State of Zoonoses provides an annual overview of this and shows developments over time.

In addition, there is a current theme every year. This year it is ‘New food sources and food safety’. What do new food patterns and food production mean for the transmission of foodborne infections? For example, the consumption of insects. The State of Zoos 2022 provides an overview of current research into this.
