In the coming season, many new productions at the Darmstadt State Theater will be about dreams and dreams, visions of the future and escapism.

In the 2023/24 season, the Staatstheater Darmstadt is dealing with dreams and dreams, visions of the future and escapism under the question “Nice dreams?”. If you put the question chosen as the motto of the season to a conversation partner, you usually get very close to him very quickly, said director Karsten Wiegand on the occasion of the program presentation. And the theater is also about closeness.

The series of nine new music theater productions begins with Jacques Offenbach’s opera “The Tales of Hoffmann” on September 30th with the dreams of an artist intoxicated by alcohol. Well-known works follow with the opera buffa “The Love Potion” by Gaetano Donizetti, which was also driven by an intoxication, with the family nightmare in the one-act play “Elektra” by Richard Strauss, a production requested by General Music Director Daniel Cohen, and with Verdi’s opera “Otello”, which he also conducted. Nina Russi stages Handel’s “Alcina” in a new way. The children’s opera “Mina oder die Reise zum Meer” by Anno Schreier is about a dream journey along a river. A music theater piece by the composer Davor Vincze, which is being further developed through productions by theaters in the “NOperas” association, revolves around advertising, truth and lies.
