A “sudden and unilateral” decision. Tuesday 23 March 2021, the collective of Landy Sauvage reacted in a statement to the closing decree taken during the day by the mayor of Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis), Mathieu Hanotin (PS). “This sudden and unilateral decision, which comes in the midst of the global health crisis and while the winter break is prolonged, appears to be particularly unfair”, regrets the group.
Risks following a fire
During the municipal council, Mathieu Hanotin indicated that a closing order was taken following the passage of the security commission. The report, which follows a fire in early March, is deemed “alarming”.
But the collective disputes the conclusions of the report. “The reasons established by the municipality call into question the security of the place as a space open to the public. However, following the health crisis, the Landy Sauvage no longer welcomes the public to its premises, ”he assures us.
About forty people living on site
The mayor of Saint-Denis also criticizes the site for hosting the public ”. “In no case is the place suitable to serve as a place of residence”, he denounces. He estimates between 40 and 60 people who reside there when “the danger is serious and imminent”.
“An immediate expulsion from the Landy Sauvage would lead to a pure and simple homelessness of many precarious people currently having no other accommodation solution ”, warns the Landy Sauvage. Originally, an execution judge ordered the evacuation of the squat on July 28. “This period allowed the search for a decent solution to continue,” assures the Landy Sauvage.
Tuesday, he assured the city council that a “transitional phase of temporary shelter Will be offered to people living on the site. Two families have already been identified. “There will be priority treatment for families with children,” he adds.
