Sputnik V Vaccine Facts, Powerful Claims Against Delta Wants to Enter RI

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Vaccine Sputnik V claimed to provide effective protection against the new variant of the corona virus Delta. The claim came from the head of the Laboratory of the Novosibirsk State University and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Sergey Netesov.

He claims the efficacy of the Sputnik V vaccine provides 90 percent protection against the variant that was originally discovered in India.

However, this claim has also been refuted by other researchers who demonstrated a weaker immune response of Sputnik V against the new Covid-19 mutation. Here are some facts behind the claims of the Russian Sputnik V Vaccine:

Claim 90 percent effective against delta variant

Quotes Hindustan Times, Netesov claims Sputnik V has a 95% efficacy or efficacy rate against the initial variant of the corona virus. Now he also claims a 90 percent efficacy rate of Sputnik V against the Delta corona variant.

He further said that the vaccine that had been developed had to be used immediately because it was quite effective. According to an interim analysis of trials published in the medical journal The Lancet, the Sputnik V vaccine had 91.6 percent efficacy.

At the end of June Vladimir Gushchin, head of the population variability mechanism laboratory of the Gamaleya research center which developed the Sputnik V vaccine, said that the vaccine claimed almost 100 percent protection against severe and fatal cases of Covid-19 caused by the Delta variant.

The Gamaleya National Center for Research on Epidemiology and Microbiology reports that Sputnik V has an efficacy of 97.6 percent.

Claims no side effects

Unlike the Oxford-AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, Russia claims there are no reports of any blood-clotting conditions in people vaccinated with Sputnik V.

Now Russian health authorities and more than 60 countries are reported to have used Sputnik V for national vaccination.

Denies immunity against delta variants

However, one of the researchers revealed that the Sputnik V vaccine produced a weaker immune response to new mutations, such as the Delta variant.

Quotes The Moscow Times, this was revealed in a peer-reviewed study published in the online medical journal Vaccines, published by the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute.

The developers of Sputnik V took blood samples from people who had completed vaccinations, to investigate the so-called virus-neutralizing activity of the antibodies when presented with the novel coronavirus mutation.

The scientists found a significant reduction in the neutralizing effect of the Sputnik V virus against the three variants that were labeled ‘Variant of Concern’ by the World Health Organization, WHO.

The three variants are the Delta, which was first identified in India, the Beta variant from South Africa and the Gamma variant from Brazil.

Against the Delta variant, researchers found a 3.1-fold decrease in efficacy in virus neutralizing activity, while 2.8-fold and 2.5-fold in the Beta and Gamma variants, respectively.
