Spotify’s redesigned Apple Watch app seems less of an afterthought

Spotify gives Apple Watch users some love, adding the UI and playback upgrades that better suit the familiar experience of larger screens. In an update released today, watchOS users will see an improved “Your Library” view with more detailed music controls and the ability to download playlists without having to go back to their iPhone.

Prior to today’s update, Spotify’s Apple Watch features were rudimentary. First, the app presented the “Your Library” view as a plain text track list. The new update offers a more attractive user interface, including graphic thumbnails. In the old version of the watchOS app, once you tapped an album or playlist, playback started instantly, without having to select options first. The new update adds a screen with two prominent buttons to download and mix your music.

Spotify first added offline playback in an update last May, but that version still required you to use your iPhone to select songs offline, and you can only download individual songs to your wearable device. Downloading entire playlists and albums without taking out the phone will be a welcome addition for Apple Watch owners. With the new update, you can also swipe from the list view to enjoy a song, a gesture already familiar to users of the Spotify iOS app.

Today’s update also improves podcast playback on Apple Watch, so you can see your listening progress and pick up where you left off. The previous version always restarted podcasts from the beginning.

In addition to Apple Watch app updates, Spotify also highlighted new touch-to-list controls for Meta’s Ray-Ban stories and music curation for Delta Airlines’ boarding tracks. The company also announced support for “Ambient Experience,” which displays playlist or podcast graphics on Fire TV Omni QLED Series televisions when you’re not watching anything. TV owners over $ 800 can use the TV remote or Spotify Connect devices to browse their music.
