Sports Business Summit at Esade Barcelona Campus: Industry Trends, Partnership Director, and America’s Cup Visibility

Sport is no longer only understood as entertainment, but also as an industry. Judith Aldabó comments how she does not like to use the concept sponsorshipprefers to call him partnershipsince “you work together, you have the same objective: to win.”

Likewise, he wanted to emphasize the need to give voice and visibility to the America’s Cup that will be held in Barcelona between August and October 2024. “We hope that the competition will have a great impact on the city,” he emphasizes.

Today the Sports Business Summit was held at the Esade Barcelona Campusorganized by Spsg Consulting in which trends in sport as a business, sponsorships, innovation and governance have been discussed.

The speakers at the event were Nacho Mas-Bagà, CEO of Girona FC; Jaume Alcover, marketing director of Baxi; Judith Aldabó, partnership director of the America’s Cup and Jordi Bertomeu, former CEO of the Euroleague. All of them moderated by Carlos Cantó, CEO of Spsg Consulting.

Nacho Mas-Bagà, delegate councilor of Girona FC, began his intervention ruling that “the new generations are teaching us what will come in the future; not only live in the countrysidebut also living committed to the fans”, within the framework of the Sports Business Summit.

Mas-Bagà, in the football sector, points out the need to “learn from each other: by growing together, we help the product to grow.” Jordi Bertomeu speaks from the voice of experience in the governance of sports leagues. “We must look at the clubs’ weaknesses and help them in every area that is necessary.”“, it states. In addition, he adds responsibility for the decisions of the clubs’ government and “as a competition cannot grow without having control of these and their consequences.”

The CEO of Girona FC has stressed that “the industry is attracting investments; but the most important thing is how investment is used on the field and off the field”. For his part, Jaume Alcover, marketing director of Baxi, points out that “the consumer is empowerment; We choose the sports industry to be able to connect with it”, thus contributing to understanding the interest of companies in sports.

The growth of sport as an industry is demonstrated by the figures it records. Currently, the sector generates 3.3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Spain, while on a global scale it is between 1.5% and 2%. The support of organizations is essential, as has been seen recently with the LaLiga Club Office, and popular interest in the sport only increases its benefits.
