I remember when we did the Germany tour, which was very successful. Every article said, “This isn’t the Tour de France. In other countries, such an event would be properly celebrated. Not with us.” As an example, Toetzke brings the Ironman in Hawaii, an event that was invented by a couple of crazy people in a pub and which has been world-famous since 1978. It is always challenging when it comes to an area event, whereas stadium events are easier to organize. But an event in the most beautiful places, with the most spectacular views and the most attractive routes offers a city or region the opportunity to present itself to the outside world, according to the expert. “There are always compromises that have to be found, it’s hard bread. Of course we also earned money with our events, otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to do it at all. But I would have liked more support from the city,” says Toetzke. He never tires of inventing new events. He is currently involved in Hyrox, a mix of steeplechasing, triathlons and Crossfit.
