Spectacular time-lapse video: 10 years of sun in 61 minutes

The NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in earth orbit has been observing the sun for 10 years. A total of 425 million high-resolution photos were taken during this time, which generated 20 million gigabytes of data. The information has helped numerous scientists to better understand how our star works and what influence it has on our planetary system.

In an impressive time-lapse video, NASA is now showing a series of recordings that the SDO has made over the past 10 years. The photos for this were taken on a wavelength of 17.1 nanometers and show the outermost layer of the atmosphere of the sun, as NASA itself states in the description of the video. The recordings were made once an hour.
