Darmstadt is awarded the Special Olympics Hessen State Games. The sports festival will take place next year.
The State Games of Special Olympics Hessen, a competition for handicapped and non-handicapped people, will take place in Darmstadt from June 15th to 17th, 2021 – this is announced by the city’s press office. The corresponding agreement has already been signed.
“We have found an excellent host city in Darmstadt,” writes Christian Hastedt-Marckwardt Vice President of Special Olympics Hessen. According to sports director Rafael Reisser (CDU), the city already has experience in organizing such large events through the annual game and sports festival.
In the Bürgerpark and the adjacent Nordbad, 700 athletes compete in sports such as soccer, athletics, swimming, table tennis, judo and cycling. In the city center – on the Woog – canoe competitions take place. There and while running, the athletes compete in the Unified Sports competitions together with their partners – athletes without disabilities.
According to the city, climbing is offered as an introductory sport for everyone. There is also a non-competitive offer where visitors can, for example, balance on a rope or complete a course on the roller board. Here participants with and without disabilities can test their mobility.
