Sparks at the start: shock to the crew of the Ryanair machine

In mid-December, the passengers on a Ryanair flight from Frankfurt am Main wanted to travel to Fuerteventura. It almost ended in disaster.

Frankfurt am Main – That could have ended pretty badly. Shortly before Christmas, passengers on a Ryanair plane wanted to escape the cold in Germany. But when trying to take off, the plane suddenly sparked.

We write Friday, December 17th at around 6:10 in the morning. At the airport in Frankfurt am Main, a Ryanair plane wants to take off in the direction of Fuerteventura – where the thermometer shows over 20 degrees Celsius even at Christmas time.

But at the moment when the machine wants to accelerate from runway D1 at Terminal 2 to the corresponding take-off speed, a spark can suddenly be seen below the right engine. The worrying spectacle can be seen in a Twitter video shared with flight safety analyst Jacdec.

In the approximately 13-second clip, the unsuccessful attempt to start, which could be aborted at the last moment a few moments after the recording, can be clearly seen. But what was the cause of the sparks?

As it turned out, a pushback bar used specifically for this purpose had not been removed from the plane when the ground crew were so-called pushing off the plane.

As a result, it was dragged along several meters during the attempt to start and ultimately caused the flying sparks that can be clearly seen in the video.

For the passengers, the planned trip came to an abrupt end. They had to leave the visibly damaged machine and switch to another flight. For the plane, however, the journey continued.

First, the Boeing 737-800 was transported to the south side of Germany’s largest commercial airport before being flown to Berlin and finally to London-Stansted for further examination.

It is not known whether the incident, which is not without risk, will have further consequences for one of the employees involved. A detailed investigation of the responsible company was at least announced.
