Spain Implements Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) HD Broadcasting Requirement Starting February 14

The broadcast of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) channels will take a leap in quality starting on February 14. This is the date set by the BOE so that all channels start broadcasting in HD. All those who keep their broadcasts at a lower quality will no longer be tuned. It will be a general “blackout” throughout Spain for all channels that broadcast in SD (Standard Definition).

This affects only those channels that, since DTT was established in Spain in 2010, continued to offer their programming in SD and not in high definition. The reality is that many chains have already adapted to this maxim. For example, in the case of La 1 it even operates in UltraHD. The minimum that all channels will have to assume to remain on DTT will be broadcasting in HD at 720p resolution.

This change proposed by the Ministry of Digital Transformation seeks to improve the DTT project that once ended analog television.

What channels will stop broadcasting from February 14?

Most general channels already had their HD version. TOyes it is in the cases of La 1, La 2, Antena 3, Cuatro, Telecinco or La Sexta. Furthermore, in the case of RTVE, there are even broadcasts with a definition greater than the minimum required by the new regulations.

However, other channels belonging to Mediaset or Atresmedia will have to immediately convert their broadcasts from SD to HD. Some of the examples are Neox, Nova, Bemad o Divinity, among others. Of course, the same applies to local television. In the province of Cádiz, the municipal of the capital, Onda Cádiz, has been operating in HD for years. 7TV also does it today in its different areas. Then, there are many other local chains from the Bay of Cádiz, Sierra and Jerez that must adapt to this requirement.

For its part, Canal Sur, which already has its main channel in HD, will transfer all its channels to this new requirement of DTT starting February 12. A path that the majority of regional television stations will follow in the first days of February in order to continue reaching all homes.
