SpaceX Successfully Launches 22 Starlink Satellites and Lands Rocket at Sea

SpaceX successfully launched 22 Starlink internet satellites into orbit on August 31, 2023, and brought the Falcon 9 rocket back for a landing at sea. The Falcon 9 rocket, carrying the Starlink spacecraft, lifted off from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 10:21 p.m. EDT. The first stage of the rocket returned to Earth as planned, touching down on the SpaceX drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas in the Atlantic Ocean about 8.5 minutes after liftoff.

This particular booster has now completed its seventh launch and landing, according to a SpaceX mission description. The company’s reuse record is 16 flights, held by two different Falcon 9 first stages. The Falcon 9’s upper stage continued flying and is expected to deploy the 22 Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit (LEO) approximately 65 minutes after liftoff.

The Starlink launch was originally scheduled to be part of a SpaceX doubleheader, with another Falcon 9 set to launch 13 satellites for the U.S. Space Force from Cape Canaveral earlier in the day. However, that launch was scrubbed due to an undisclosed issue. SpaceX is now targeting Friday, September 1, at 11:26 a.m. EDT for the Space Force liftoff.

SpaceX continues to make strides in its mission to provide global broadband coverage through its Starlink satellite constellation. With each successful launch and landing, the company is advancing its goal of revolutionizing internet connectivity around the world.
