The delay is due to a temperature issue with the spacecraft’s liquid methane fuel. Originally scheduled to launch on February 14th, the liftoff has been rescheduled for no earlier than February 15th at 1:05 a.m. EST.
The Odysseus moon lander, developed by Intuitive Machines, utilizes liquid methane as propellant for its propulsion and landing systems. The fuel is loaded into the lander shortly before launch, and it was during this preparation phase that SpaceX detected “improper methane temperatures,” according to NASA.
The Odysseus mission holds great significance as it aims to become the first-ever private mission to land on the moon. Astrobotic’s Peregrine lander, launched on January 8th atop a United Launch Alliance Vulcan Centaur rocket, experienced a fuel leak during flight, rendering a landing attempt impossible. Instead, the lander looped around the moon and ultimately burned up in Earth’s atmosphere upon its return.
