SpaceX, the private aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company founded by Elon Musk, has announced a delay in its first NASA astronaut launch of 2024. The delay is due to weather concerns near the launch site in Florida. The mission, called Crew-8, was originally scheduled for February 22 but has been pushed back multiple times.
The new launch date is set for Saturday night at 11:16 p.m. EST from Pad 39A of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral. The mission will be carried out using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. The delay was necessary due to unfavorable weather conditions forecasted for Friday, March 1, along the flight track of the Dragon spacecraft.

If the Dragon capsule were to splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean, the sea conditions must be within acceptable limits for the safe recovery of the crew and spacecraft.
The Crew-8 mission will transport four astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) for a six-month mission in orbit. The crew consists of NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt, Jeanette Epps, and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin. They are expected to return to Earth in late August.
This mission will mark SpaceX’s ninth crewed flight for NASA under a multi-billion-dollar agreement to ferry astronauts to and from the ISS. SpaceX has been successfully conducting astronaut missions for NASA since May 2020. Another company, Boeing, is also scheduled to begin its own crewed flights for NASA in April using its Starliner spacecraft.
