SP stops support for youth organization RED after unrest about new chairman | NOW

The party council of the Socialist Party (SP) agreed on Friday evening to suspend support for the RED youth division. With that, the youth club is in fact disposed of. There was unrest in the youth department after two disbarred SP members were appointed to the board. They were previously expelled from the party because of their membership of the Communist Platform (CP).

According to the party council, in which the chairmen of the SP departments sit, the youth department no longer fits the purpose of the SP. The party board and the party council, who are in charge of the course of the SP, say that the youth department wants to turn the SP into a communist party.

The fact that the recently appointed chairman of ROOD and another board member are members of the CP was reason for the SP to intervene. Officially, this is because SP membership cannot be combined with membership of another party. The SP regards the CP as a party. Also, according to party rules, someone can only be a member of RED if he is also a member of the SP.

Almost two weeks ago put the SP will stop all funding to the youth organization by appointing the board members.

RED board members cause unrest at SP

Behind the scenes at the SP, unrest arose because of the newly elected RED board members. They were previously described by the party as “radicalized attic communists”.

The expelled SP members were elected by more than three-quarters of the votes by RED members as the new board members of the youth department. The SP board feared that the RED youths wanted to show that they expect a more radical course from the party.

The party council decided on Friday to come up with a committee to investigate how the discontent and quarrel could have arisen in ROOD and the SP. The results will be presented in May 2021.

SP chairman Jannie Visscher reported on Friday after the party council that the situation at RED is dear to her. “Young people must feel at home in our party, be able to be active and also have the space.”
