Southgate takes responsibility: ‘I have chosen players for penalty series’

After two lost European Championship finals (2000 and 2012), Italy managed to win the final battle this time. It is only the second time that Italy takes home the European title, after winning the tournament in 1968. It caused the well-known joy scenes afterwards.

“We reacted well after the early goal and deserved this victory,” said national coach Roberto Mancini. “We look forward to celebrating this with the people of Italy.”

The cup goes to Rome

Gianluigi Donnarumma was named player of the tournament afterwards. The goalkeeper of Italy saved two English penalties in the penalty shootout. “This is extraordinary, we are very happy. We have a fantastic group that never gives up. This is spectacular, magnificent.”

“We deserved it, all of Italy deserved it. There was something magical in the air and it’s an incredible feeling,” said captain Giorgio Chiellini. “The key was to keep playing football and have fun. We made history, we are going to celebrate this with all of Italy.”

Goal scorer Leonardo Bonucci was also acclaimed. Italy cleared the early 1-0 deficit with his goal. “A historic goal, a dream come true,” said Bonucci. “They thought the cup would stay here in London. But it’s going to Rome!”
