Southern State Flag, Mississippi | Mississippi removes disputed symbol from the state flag

The Mississippi Congress on Sunday decided to remove the disputed Southern state symbol in the state’s flag.

There was broad cross-political support to remove the symbol from the flag of the state of the south of the United States. Republican Governor Tate Reeves says he wants to sign the bill, and the state flag loses the official status it has enjoyed as soon as he does.

The decision was first voted through in the House of Representatives by 91 against 23 votes. A few hours later, the Senate voted by 37 against 14 votes for the bill.

The flag was changed more than a hundred years ago by politicians who were convinced of the superiority of the white race. The change occurred a generation after the southern states lost the American Civil War.

Objections to the state flag have increased recently in the wake of protests against racial discrimination in the United States. In Mississippi, 38 percent of the population is black, and the flag is largely considered racist.

Mississippi is the only state in the United States that has the Southern symbol as part of the official flag. Georgia took it away in 2003.

A commission will now propose a new flag containing the words “In God We Trust”, and voters will decide on the proposal in the November 3 election.
