More than 13,000 people in Colombia have had to flee violence between armed groups and government forces this year, according to a report to the UN Security Council obtained by AFP on Friday.
“The situation in the Pacific region is particularly worrying,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in this report. “Thousands of civilians are stuck in the crossfire between illegal armed actors and the law enforcement agencies.”
The report indicates that 13,422 people, including 5,574 minors, were displaced by violence in this country in 2021. Colombia is experiencing the worst level of clashes due to armed groups this year since the signing of the agreement in 2016. peace between Bogotá and the Farc guerrillas.
According to experts, the state has not regained control of the territories previously controlled by the Marxist guerrillas, which has facilitated the consolidation of new armed organizations. Farc dissidents, ELN guerrilla rebels and paramilitary trafficking gangs are fighting to appropriate the profits from drug trafficking, extortion and illegal mining.
