The design here is simple – cups and rim made of textured plastic, 40mm drivers and oversized soft ear pads. They do not have a strong ear grip, so the device can be used all day. This is also facilitated by a fat battery, with which the headphones will last 38 hours. If you turn on the ACP, the autonomy will drop to 30 hours, which is still respectable.
In terms of sound, the WH-1000XM4 is definitely among the top in its price segment. The headset received a proprietary DAC and an analog amplifier from Sony, which was used in earlier versions. The sound is luxurious and very rhythmic. Compared to the WH-1000XM3, the highs are smoother and the bass is richer.
The DSEE Extreme processor is responsible for the quality here, which helps to recreate the sound close to the original. The Adaptive Sound Control option adjusts the sound to the environment, and the active noise reduction function perfectly blocks out all extraneous sounds. There is a multipoint that allows you to connect to several devices simultaneously, and a Wearing Detection function that pauses playback if you remove the headset from your head.
Of course, there are also disadvantages. It’s a pity that they didn’t add support for the aptX codec and didn’t announce moisture protection. Of course, the headphones should be able to cope with splashes, but if you get caught in the rain, then all the responsibility lies with you.
