Sony sold 400,000 Xperia in Q1, worst record ever

Sony records its worst record for sales of Xperia smartphones in the first quarter of 2020. With only 400,000 devices sold between January and March 2020, the manufacturer posted a 63% drop in sales compared to the same period in 2019.

It is unfortunately no longer a secret for anyone. Sony’s mobile division is on the brink, the fault of continually declining sales, and popularity at half mast among consumers. At the end of October 2019, many media relayed a terrifying news: Sony sells as many smartphones in 3 months as Huawei in a day.

However, the manufacturer hoped to get back on track with the launch of the Xperia 1, a smartphone with undeniable qualities, with its elegant design, its excellent performance in play, or its very pleasant overlay. Only, its particular format in 21: 9 was not unanimous while its low autonomy and his perfectible camera didn’t help it stand out from the competition.

5G, Sony’s only hope?

And on this Wednesday, May 13, 2020, the nightmare does not seem to stop. Sony announces that it has sold only 400,000 Xperia smartphones between January and March 2020. These results are the worst recorded by the manufacturer and represents a fall of 63.7% sales compared to last year. Indeed, over the same period in 2019, Sony had sold nearly 1.1 million Xperia-branded devices.

In fact, the Japanese company has not met its objective of 700,000 devices sold at the end of the first quarter of 2020. Obviously, the current health crisis has not made things easier. As Sony points out, the pandemic has severely disrupted supply, production and demand. In 2019 as a whole, Sony sold 3.2 million Xperia smartphones.

However, in April 2019, the manufacturer hoped to reach the 5 million devices sold, before regularly reviewing its targets downward, going to 4 million, then to 3.5 million. For the current fiscal year, Sony did not provide an estimate of sales, due to the multiple uncertainties associated with the coronavirus. Not surprisingly, these results will depend heavily on the performance of the Xperia 1 II, the brand’s first 5G smartphone, and Xperia 10 II, a promising mid-range with an OLED screen.
