Sony is said to be preparing the Game Pass challenger “Spartacus”

A new report claims that Sony is currently preparing to merge its current subscription services into a single service codenamed “Spartacus”.

Sony currently offers two different subscription services for Playstation. One comes in the form of Playstation Plus which is required for most of the online gaming on the company consoles. The other is Playstation Now which is a service that offers a set of game titles subscribers can download or stream directly to their devices.

Sony is now said to be preparing to merge these two services. The new platform is said to go under the code name Spartacus and the reporter Jason Schreier claims that the Playstation Plus brand will remain but that the Playstation Now name will retire.

Spartacus is said to be offered three different designs with different price tags per month. One of these with current Playstation Plus features, another with Playstation 4 and eventually Playstation 5 games. The third and probably most expensive is said to offer things like demo versions of games and a library of classic Playsation titles. This library should then include games from Playstation 1, 2, 3 and the handheld console PSP.

If the information is correct, Spartacus could be very similar Microsofts Xbox Game Pass. However, whether Sony and Playstation can actually compete with the challenging service remains to be seen. Microsoft offers many great games from its own game studios from day one on its platform. Something that feels like a necessity for Sony to hook on if Spartacus will be able to tackle Game Pass, which just seems to be growing bigger and bigger.
