Sony Enters Patent for Players to Use Household Items and Food as PlayStation Controls in Augmented Reality

Sony filed for a patent for an idea that would allow players to use household items like PlayStation controllers using augmented reality.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. has applied for a patent for an idea that would allow PlayStation users to transform household items and food products into PlayStation controls through augmented reality. The application, filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, includes an illustration of a banana being used as a PlayStation controller.

“The system comprises an operable input unit for obtaining images of a passive non-luminous object maintained by a user such as a video game controller”, explains the patent. “For example, a player can hold two bananas – one in each respective hand; or, for example, two oranges – one in each respective hand. “

The patent is simply an order, which means that Sony does not have a finished product ready or even confirmed plans to launch one. “It would be desirable for a user to be able to use a cheap, simple, non-electronic device as a video game peripheral,” continues the patent.

Sony launched its newest PlayStation console in late 2020, which included a new DualSense wireless controller. Despite being released months ago, the PlayStation 5 is still hard to find in most stores. In early 2021, reports suggested that a major resupply of PS5 in February would keep the system on the shelves, but that was not the case.
