Sony doesn’t care if PlayStation Portal makes a profit.

It is very rare that a company is not concerned with making money. That’s pretty much the only thing you should care about in business, right? Well, Sony seems to have a different plan. According to the Japanese website AV Watch (transcribed by PlayStation Lifestyle ), the new PlayStation Portal handheld was not developed with profit in mind.

“Instead of profitability, we want to increase the time we can play with PS5. If you can play anywhere, I think that someone will definitely spend more time playing games”, said Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of platform experience.

PlayStation Portal appears to be a niche device that can be used by those who want to play more on PS5, but don’t necessarily want to sit in front of a large TV for hours on end. It certainly won’t have the same mass appeal as the Nintendo Switch, but it appears to be a solid product for its intended audience, and that’s all you can ask for, especially when you don’t care about money.
