Sonora falls back at the Covid-19 traffic light, but advances in economic reactivation

Since last November 9, the government of Sonora He decided to go back at the epidemiological traffic light from yellow to orange and will remain so, at least until next Monday, December 7, by increasing his level of risk of spreading the disease.

Meanwhile, a series of measures are executed with the aim of achieving, in an orderly manner, the reactivation of activities productive.

The Secretary of Economy of the entity, Jorge Vidal Ahumada, explained that the color of the traffic light is not a function of the number of deaths that occur due to Covid-19, but because of the saturation levels of the hospitals and in the case of some of the IMSS and the Ministry of Health they already had occupancy levels of between 85 and 90 percent.

According to statistics from the entity’s government, as of June there was an increase in the number of occupied beds, that reached its highest point on July 1, when 784 beds were occupied and 957 available.

From that date on, occupancy slowly fell until October 11, when it reached the lowest level with 138 occupied beds and 878 available beds.

The bad thing was that from that date on there was a slow but constant increase, and by November 1 there were already 181 occupied and 888 available.

Until last Thursday, December 3, of the 1,198 beds that were available to treat covid patients in state hospitals, 774 were available, that is, 64.60% and 424 were occupied.

The truth is that the graphs that show the records of occupied beds show a notable increase.

If the evolution of confirmed data per week is analyzed, an upward trend is observed from the second of October to the last of November.

In the week of October 12 to 18 there were 760 cases and in the week of November 23 to 29, 1,757.

As of Friday, December 4, 43,834 cases had been confirmed in Sonora, of which 2,603 were active and 3,441 deaths had occurred. The fatality rate was 7.85.

Most of the confirmed cases have been registered in Hermosillo (46%), Cajeme (13%) and Nogales (7%).

The first objective is to save lives; the second to avoid greater economic impacts

Vidal Ahumada, who also serves as technical secretary of the Covid-19 Intersecretary Council in Sonora, pointed out that it seeks to contain the pandemic to save lives, but also greater negative impacts on the economy.

For this reason, recreational, cultural, sports activities and social celebrations, such as private parties, fifteen years, weddings, baptisms, among others, were suspended. As in the yellow traffic light, clubs and nightclubs remain closed.

From Monday to Thursday, activities in restaurants, restaurant-bars, food parks, casinos, party halls, entertainment centers, cinemas, outlets, among others, are suspended from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

In the case of restaurants and restaurant-bars, taquerías, inns, diners, from Friday to Sunday, they will not be able to receive guests at the premises, they will only be able to offer home delivery, among other provisions.

In this situation, entertainment companies, bars and restaurants will have to operate with certain restrictions in order to contain the pandemic.

The rest of the economic sectors, mainly the so-called strategic ones, keep working with a series of measures that allow controlled environments to avoid contagion.

For example, passenger buses are not allowed to occupy more than 50% of the seats and it is mandatory use of mask.

Likewise, it has been arranged that the companies carry out tests to 250 people weekly and in some cases such as the company Constellation Brands, located in Ciudad Obregón and Ford de Hermosillo, 500.

Reactivation is almost complete

While working to control the pandemic, sectors considered economically strategic such as aerospace, electrical-electronic, automotive, photovoltaic energy, medical devices and mining, have already recovered their activities to 95 percent.

Currently, except for entertainment industry and restaurant companies, which remain unemployed or operate with restrictions, the productive sectors of the entity have been reactivated with a series of strict measures to contain the Covid-19 pandemic,

In the automotive sector alone, in Sonora there are approximately 98 companies, with around 50,000 employees. In aerospace, there are 60 companies, with about 10,000 jobs. Mining generates 19,000 jobs.

On the other hand, despite the economic consequences of Covid-19, Sonora has registered the arrival of new investments, which are explained by the signature of the T-MEC and the settlement near the United States border of Chinese and American companies, which until a few weeks ago were installed in Asia, explained the entity’s Secretary of Economy, Jorge Vidal Ahumada.

This is explained because the signing of the trade agreement created a secure horizon in economic matters for companies that intend to negotiate in the North American market. In addition, the relocation of Chinese companies that operate in the United States and are looking for sites near the border with that country began to materialize, because changes in trade, derived from the pandemic, force them to be closer to their market.

The same happened with some US companies that had installed plants in Chinese territory and now want to be close to the American Union, because the ways of doing business have changed, at least in logistics.

This is the case of the smoke alarm manufacturer Carrier, which brought its entire operation from China to Sonora, where it created 1,200 jobs. Meanwhile, the US furniture manufacturer La Z Boy is preparing to start operations in San Luis Río Colorado.

The manufacturer of medical devices BD, has just started work in Hermosillo, as well as the developer of industrial parks SkyBridge y TE Connectivity.

According to information from the state government, between March and June around 37,000 were lost. formal jobs, but, at the end of October they had already recovered and 1,800 more jobs were created. The jobs that should have been created if the pandemic had not occurred are missing. They are between 15,000 and 16,000.
