Son of Actor Gary Sinise, McCanna Anthony Sinise, Dies at 33 After Battle with Rare Cancer

The music industry mourns the loss of a talented musician as McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, son of actor Gary Sinise, passed away at the age of 33 after a long and courageous battle with chordoma, a rare form of cancer. The news was confirmed by his father in a heartfelt tribute posted on his foundation’s website. Mac’s love for music was unwavering, even in the face of adversity, as he recorded his album “Resurrection and Revival” in the final months of his life.

Mac Sinise’s musical journey began at the tender age of 9 when he discovered his passion for drumming. He had the privilege of performing alongside his father’s Lt. Dan Band as a substitute drummer for Danny Gottlieb. His dedication to his craft led him to pursue a degree in songwriting and composition at the prestigious USC Thornton School of Music. Mac’s talent extended beyond the drums, as he also played the piano and taught himself to play the harmonica when his illness prevented him from playing the drums.

In 2018, Mac received the devastating diagnosis of chordoma. Despite the challenges he faced, he continued to create and share his music with the world. One of his notable compositions, “Arctic Circles,” was a project he had started during his college years and adapted as his condition worsened. Collaborating with fellow musicians Dan Myers, Ben Lewis, and Oliver Schnee, Mac recorded “Arctic Circles” along with a version of the classic song “Shenandoah,” showcasing his harmonica skills.

Gary Sinise, in his tribute to his son, shared the evolution of Mac’s creative journey. The collaboration on “Arctic Circles” sparked a vision in Mac’s mind to create an entire album titled “Resurrection and Revival.” The album’s theme revolved around bringing something old or unfinished back to life. Mac had three more original compositions in mind, and with the help of Oliver, they crafted the arrangements and prepared to return to the studio.

“Resurrection and Revival” features the Lt. Dan Band, including Gary Sinise himself. Despite the heartbreaking loss, the album will be completed and released soon, with pre-orders currently available. Mac expressed his desire for the proceeds from the album to be donated to the Gary Sinise Foundation, a cause close to both his and his father’s hearts.

Mac Sinise’s dedication extended beyond his musical pursuits. He worked as the assistant manager of education and outreach for the Gary Sinise Foundation, actively supporting veterans until January 2020 when he had to step away due to his declining health. His commitment to serving others was evident in his work with the foundation.

The passing of McCanna Anthony Sinise leaves a void in the music industry, but his legacy will live on through his music and the impact he made on those around him. As Gary Sinise aptly expressed, “Like any family experiencing such a loss, we are heartbroken and have been managing as best we can. As parents, it is so difficult losing a child. My heart goes out to all who have suffered a similar loss, and to anyone who has lost a loved one. We’ve all experienced it in some way.” Mac’s passion for music and his unwavering spirit will continue to inspire musicians and touch the hearts of listeners for years to come.
