‘Sometimes almost seven sugar cubes in ready-to-eat satay sauce’

In the middle of the barbecue season, the Consumers’ Association delved into ready-made satay sauces and noted (too) much sugar and salt in the majority of the sauces. Ten out of the seventeen peanut sauces examined is too sweet, in four cases too salty.

The Consumers’ Association looked at the nutritional value of the satay sauces (also known as the peanut sauce) and checked how many peanuts, calories, sugar, fat and salt are in the various containers, jars and bags.

Winner sauce

The Verstegen ready-to-eat satay sauce low in sodium comes out best. This sauce contains only a little bit of salt (0.2 grams per 100 grams) and very little sugar (1.9 grams per 100 grams). The Calvé Peanut Sauce Ready Made Mild contains the most sugar: 27 grams per 100 grams, which are almost 7 sugar cubes.

Little improvement

In a decade, manufacturers have done “disappointingly little” to make their products less salty, the Consumers’ Association concluded. On average, the products contain 1.3 grams of salt per 100 grams, just as much as in a previous test by the Consumers’ Association in 2010. Almost a quarter of the sauces contain 1.7 grams to 2 grams of salt (per 100 grams).

Healthy fat

The Flower Brand Ready made Peanut Saté sauce ends at the bottom. This sauce contains a lot of salt and sugar and is the only one that gets insufficient for fat, because it contains a lot of saturated fat. The other sauces contain proportionally more healthy unsaturated fats.
