Some Mac users with the Apple M1 complain of high SSD wear

Processors Apple M1 they are awarded for high performance and low consumption. However, some users of computers with this processor complain about high SSD wear. The main problem is that in the case of Macs, SSDs are firmly attached to the motherboard and cannot be replaced. With the death of the SSD, the whole computer ends. The question, however, is how serious the problem is, how much it is a system error, and how much it is just overuse.

One of the first results, which appeared on the Internet and triggered the whole “case”, showed 150 TBW per 2TB SSD after 2 months of use. This means that each cell has already been rewritten about 75 times, and that’s quite a lot. At the same time, this also means about 2.5 TBW per day (1.25 transcripts of the entire 2TB per day), ie less than 30 MB / s, if we assume the use 24/7. In this case, however, it was a very demanding use, when even a larger 16GB of RAM is probably not enough and the computer swaps more often. 2TB SSDs usually have a lifespan between 1000 and 3500 TBW, which would mean that this user could leave after 1-4 years of use.

Another result on the Internet even measured 250 TBW on a 512GB SSD, ie about 500 transcripts in very demanding use. This could be the lifespan of an SSD in just a few months, and the question is why so many transcripts have been achieved in such a short time. E.g. in the HotHardware editorial office they have only a 256GB version (in addition only with 8 GB of RAM) and in the whole period of 4 months they recorded only 2.8 TBW, ie 11 transcripts. It is possible that Macs do not have problems with normal use, but with a high occupied amount of integrated RAM, swapping will occur, which is probably more aggressive than it should be.
