Somali pirates hijack Panamanian ship | Abroad

According to Musse Salah, the governor of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, the ship was on its way from the United Arab Emirates to the port of the Somali capital Mogadishu when it encountered mechanical problems. Six pirates saw their chance and took over command. The number of crew members on board and their nationality is still unclear. Their release is already being negotiated.

Stricter security measures

At the height of their violent presence off the Somali coast in 2011, pirates raided 237 boats. They took hundreds of sailors hostage. The hijackings decreased in the years that followed due to stricter security measures, more patrols of warships and less risky shipping routes.
