German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday called for continued Western support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, stressing that Germany will not relax its efforts to support Kiev.
Speaking at a gathering of European social democrats in Bucharest, Solz stressed that the best way to prevent any escalation, including a potential conflict between Russia and NATO, was what he called “effective deterrence”.

“The war in Ukraine will end the moment Russian President Putin decides to withdraw his troops. However, he will only take this decision if he realizes that he cannot win the war on the battlefield,” noted the German leader, whose country has so far provided 28 billion euros in military support to Ukraine.
“That is why we are investing more in our own security and defense together as Europeans, so that no one dares to attack us. This also means that we put aside our narrow petty interests and build a strong and truly European defense industry”, said Olaf Solz.
It is recalled, however, that the Chancellor of Germany, last month, repeated his refusal to deliver Taurus missiles to Ukraine, stressing that he considers the deployment of long-range weapons, which require the deployment of German soldiers outside the country, a limit he does not wish to exceed .
“As chancellor, I have the responsibility to prevent Germany from getting involved in this war,” Scholz clarified.
