Solving the fentanyl crisis is up to the United States itself – 2024-02-13 19:07:57

/ world today news/ On January 30 in Beijing, the head of China’s State Narcotics Control Commission held a joint meeting on the issue of the fight against drugs with a visiting American delegation. “The meeting gave an active signal of cooperation as part of both sides’ efforts to warm bilateral relations,” commented “Associated Press”.

On the same day, a Sino-American working group on cooperation in the field officially began work. This is an important measure to implement the consensus reached at the meeting between the two heads of state in San Francisco. Also on January 30, authorities in the US state of Oregon declared a state of emergency in downtown Portland because of the public health and safety crisis caused by fentanyl abuse.

Fentanyl is a type of powerful opioid originally used for clinical analgesia and anesthesia. Due to its long-term abuse, the preparation is now a socially dangerous drug. According to the US Drug Enforcement Agency, fentanyl is now the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 and 45. Although the United States is the country with the most serious fentanyl abuse problem in the world, it has not yet included all substances related to it on the list of prohibited drugs. In May 2019, China became the first in the world to list 25 fentanyl-type substances as controlled drugs, more than even the UN regulations.

More broadly, the resumption of anti-narcotics cooperation between China and the United States signals a warming of bilateral relations. As long as Beijing and Washington follow the right path of mutual understanding based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation, the trend can be maintained and there is hope that bilateral relations will continue to stabilize and recover.
