Russian forces have pushed into Ukraine from the north, east and south since they began their invasion on February 24, but have met intense resistance from Ukrainian troops that has likely caught Moscow by surprise, according to Western sources.

The apparent Russian plan to quickly seize the two largest cities, Kyiv and Kharkiv, has faltered due to “creative” resistance from Ukrainian troops and the Russians’ own fuel and logistical support problems, according to the Pentagon. In fact, the main Russian force remains stalled some 30 kilometers north of the capital, which remains in Ukrainian hands despite nightly gunfights.

A US official, speaking anonymously to reporters in Washington, told AFP that Russia had now deployed about two-thirds of the 150,000-strong fighting force it had positioned on Ukraine’s borders.
