Two soldiers successfully resuscitated a walker on the first day of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches. The corporals of the Navy and the National Reserve Corps themselves walked along and saw a man on the trail who was not doing well.

When they approached the man, they got no response. They then examined him and one of them started CPR while the other got help. British medics, meanwhile, offered support. After a minute and a half of CPR, the walker regained consciousness. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby medical center.

The Nijmegen Four Days Marches is today officially starteda day pretends than planned due to yesterday’s extreme heat. Today it was still well above 30 degrees in the afternoon and stuffy.

Fainting after entering

On the first day, there were no serious medical problems besides the one CPR. During the Day of Wijchen 493 runners have blistered along the way. Up to the end of the afternoon, 723 blister treatments were done. Walkers were also treated for minor heat complaints, insect bites and abrasions.

After arrival, a “remarkably many” hikers suffered from heat complaints and fainting. The Red Cross attributes this to, among other things, the stuffy day. “Hikers cross the finish line and take a glass of alcohol. That cuts off if you have consumed energy all day, perhaps if you have drunk little and have a salt deficiency. Then you fall,” operational leader Pelster told the ANP.

Furthermore, on the first March day, 1490 of the 37,000 runners dropped out, considerably more than the previous Four Days Marches in 2019, when 661 walkers did not reach the finish line on the first day. At the time, however, it was ideal hiking weather, according to march leader Henny Sackers. Tomorrow, when the trip goes via the Zevenheuvelenweg to Groesbeek, it will be a maximum of 26 degrees less warm than today.
