Society: Switzerland: climate strikers will manifest themselves this Friday – Switzerland

The Strike for the Future was to be the great spring meeting for climate strikers. They wanted to make this Friday, May 15, a symbolic day of the convergence of social and climate struggles. Coronavirus forces, they fall back on the Net and balconies.

The great day of strikes and actions on the streets of all of Switzerland is postponed. The organizers of this “Strike for Future” – the Swiss Climate Strike movement but also many unions, political parties, collectives and associations – have therefore concocted an alternative program to respect the ban on gatherings of more than five people and the distance social.

In most cantons, symbolic, alternative and noisy actions are planned during the day in favor of a Switzerland that is neutral in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and more respectful of the environment.

Meet at 11:59 a.m.

The flagship event will be the “Climate Alarm” action, scheduled across the country at 11.59 am. The population and especially young people are invited to “use pans or instruments, turn up the sound of music or sing and shout slogans, stand on the balcony or open the windows wide to make noise”. Micro-demonstrations will take place, on the principle of “4 square meters” spaces to respect good social distancing.

The day will also be marked by intense digital activity, explain the organizers on their website. Many challenges will be offered on social networks. This will involve solving as many “challenges” as possible as a community and sharing them with the outside world.

Online radio

The Climate Strike also organizes an online radio from 8:00 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. The day’s program includes discussions, debates and music, as well as a follow-up to the day and the various actions. A competition for the most beautiful banner will also take place during the day.

Among the topics covered: food sovereignty, environmental education, climate refugees, the post-coronavirus crisis, climate change and working conditions, and the impact of digital technology.

For their part, the unions are taking advantage of this day to demand that “the fight against climate change be waged by investing to create jobs and improve public service”, they wrote in a press release.
