A day after the withdrawal of a second team from the MLS restart tournament, Sporting Kansas City reported on Friday that one of its footballers is infected with coronavirus.
The player, who was not identified, “received a couple of positive results for COVID-19 (…) This person will remain in isolation and will be monitored and examined daily, Sporting Kansas City said in a statement.

“The rest of the members of the club’s delegation have given negative results” and will now be tested daily for 14 days, the franchise added.
In another statement, the North American soccer league (MLS) said it detected a single positive case of a player in tests conducted with franchises since Thursday, without identifying the soccer player.
The confirmation of the positive case of Sporting Kansas City comes a day after the withdrawal of the Nashville SC team, which was infected by nine players with the coronavirus.
Last Monday, FC Dallas was the first team to have to leave the ‘MLS is Back’ tournament, which is held from Wednesday behind closed doors at the Disney World sports complex (Orlando), due to the contagion of 10 players and a member of the coaching staff.

The MLS has implemented great prevention measures around the teams, all concentrated in the same Disney World hotel, applying thousands of tests to soccer players, coaches and the rest of the staff.
The ‘MLS is Back’, in which 24 teams remain, has a format similar to that of the World Cup, with group stage and elimination rounds that will conclude with the final on August 11.
