Before the second division season, Fortuna Düsseldorf was in a spirit of optimism. After the mixed season under Uwe Rösler, the club managers had hired a young, modern coach in Christian Preusser, with whom they wanted to build something new. The Preusser club did not want to put too much pressure on, so the season’s goal was not promotion to the Bundesliga, but promotion “play along” was issued.
Fortuna has to look down
A good four and a half months and 15 game days later, this season’s goal seems almost unattainable. Fortuna only scored 16 points – half as many as the front runner FC St. Pauli – and only two points ahead of relegation place 16. The team has been without a win for five competitive games (four defeats) and has to look down: relegation battle instead of promotion race – that is reality.
And Düsseldorf urgently needs to improve its performance in order not to slip even lower. Because with that Sport-Verein">SV Darmstadt (Friday, 6.30 p.m.) and St. Pauli (December 11), the Rhinelander will face the top teams in the league in the next two games.
