According to the World Health Organization (WHO) website, the nipah virus is a zoonotic virus that is transmitted from animals to humans, and can also be transmitted through contaminated food or directly between humans.

The nipah virus is said to have a death rate of up to 75 percent. This virus can spread between humans and from animals to humans through contact with infected animals.

The Health Ministry’s Director of Vector Infectious and Zoonotic Disease Prevention and Control, Didik Budijanto warned Indonesians to always be aware of the potential for nipah virus transmission from pigs in Malaysia from fruit-eating bats.

With the emergence of the Nipah virus, people were asked to be careful. One thing that is also important for the public to know about the symptoms of this Nipah virus.

So, what are the symptoms of being infected with the Nipah virus?

Reporting from the CDC.gov page, Saturday, January 20, 2021, vipah virus infection can cause mild to severe illness, including brain swelling (encephalitis) and potentially death. Symptoms usually appear within 4-14 days of exposure to the virus. This disease initially appears as a fever and headache for 3-14 days.

Not only that, often the symptoms of being infected with the nipah virus can also be related to respiratory diseases, such as coughing, sore throat and difficulty breathing.

An inflammatory phase of the brain (encephalitis) may occur, during which symptoms can include drowsiness, disorientation and mental confusion, which can rapidly progress to a coma within 24-48 hours.

Symptoms of being infected with the nipah virus may initially include one or more of the following:

-Fever
-Headache
-Cough
-Sore throat
-Hard to breath
-Throw up

Severe symptoms that can occur, such as:

-Disorientation, drowsiness or confusion
-Confidence
-Come on
Swelling of the brain (encephalitis)

Death can occur in 40-75 percent of cases. Long-term side effects in survivors of nipah virus infection have also been noted, including persistent seizures and personality changes.

Nipah virus infections that cause symptoms and sometimes death much later after exposure (known as inactive or latent infection) have also been reported months and even years after exposure.
