Snowy Weather Causes Major Traffic Problems in Eastern Norway

On Tuesday, there are major problems in traffic, canceled flights and public transport problems as a result of the snowy weather.

What for many in Eastern Norway was a sweet foretaste of summer, has quickly turned around, and become a sour retrospective, marked by cold, slop and delays.

According to state meteorologist Tone Christin Thaule, there is fortunately better weather in store for those who live in Eastern Norway.

She says that the rainfall is now moving towards the north and north-east.

– The entire precipitation field is heading north, and tonight it is along the Swedish border, says Thaule, who also points out that snow may continue to fall in the far north of Eastern Norway throughout the day.

Not unusual for April

– Improvement is on the way, absolutely! A northerly wind is expected, and there will gradually be a little less cloud. There may also be periods of sunshine, says Thaule.

The state meteorologist says that in the last 24 hours there has been a good deal of fresh snow in several places in Eastern Norway.

– At Bjørnholt in Oslo, there has been 30 centimeters of fresh snow since yesterday. Yesterday it was 30 centimetres, and now it is 60, says Thaule.

At Einavatnet in Veste Toten, as much as 50 centimeters of snow has fallen in the last 24 hours, the Meteorologists write Twitter.

Thaule says that the Meteorological Institute on Tuesday morning included Oslo in the yellow danger warning for snow, due to a lower temperature than predicted.

Although many were in for a surprise on Tuesday morning, Thaule says that this type of weather change is not abnormal for the month of April.

– April is a typical month where you can get shifts like we have now, where it goes from summer to winter in a week. But there has been an unusually high amount of rainfall locally in the Eastland area, says Thaule, who can reveal that the weather is now heading for better weather.

– The precipitation occurs during the evening, and after that there will be little precipitation. There may be frost at night, and it won’t be as summer-like in terms of temperature, but at least there won’t be snow, says Thaule.

Rainfall record

At the same time as the snow has subsided, rainfall records have been broken in several places in Eastern Norway.

At Blindern in Oslo, 34.5 millimeters have fallen, the most that has ever been recorded in 24 hours this month. Record amounts of rainfall have also occurred at weather stations in Hakadal, Ringsaker, Lunner, at Toten and Hønefoss.

The same has happened further south, at Askim, Rygge, Råde, Fredrikstad and several other places. At Melsom in Sandefjord municipality, more than 60 millimeters of rain fell.

Where the precipitation has come as snow, and where it has rained, is not immediately clear from the statistics.
