SMN Predicts Fifth Winter Storm and New Cold Front for Mexico, Causing Heavy Rains and Snow – Jan 31, 2023

Mexico City, Jan 31 (EFE).- The fifth winter storm of the 2023-2024 season will originate this Thursday afternoon, accompanied by a new cold front, number 32, predicted the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Mexico.

In its most recent report on Wednesday, the SMN explained that this phenomenon will be associated with a polar trough that will extend over the northeast, center and south of the country, which will coincide with the entry of humidity caused by the polar and subtropical jet currents. .

In addition, the agency dependent on the National Water Commission (Conagua) of the Mexican Government, forecast rains and showers in the northwest, east, center, west and south of Mexican territory.

In this sense, ‘very heavy’ rains were warned in Baja California, ‘strong’ in Baja California Sur, Sonora and Chihuahua, as well as showers in Sinaloa, Durango, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Michoacán, Guerrero and Oaxaca .

As well as falling snow or sleet on peaks above 4,200 meters in the west, center and east of the country, such as in the Nevado de Colima, Nevado de Toluca, Popocatépetl, Iztaccíhuatl and the Pico de Orizaba.

The possible fall of snow or sleet was also predicted in mountainous areas of Baja California, extending during the early hours of Friday towards Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa and Zacatecas; as well as in the aforementioned regions in the morning.

The Meteorological Service anticipated that cold front 32 will approach northwest Mexico, “it will be associated with a polar trough and the polar jet stream, giving rise to the fifth winter storm of the season,” highlighted the SMN.

Heavy to very heavy rains could cause flooding or flooding, so the population was urged to heed the warnings of the National Meteorological Service of the National Water Commission, and follow the recommendations of Civil Protection.

Given the estimated drop in temperatures, the SMN of Conagua called on the Mexican population “to keep warm and hydrate properly, not expose themselves to sudden changes in temperature and provide special attention to children and older adults.”
