Smartphone sales increase 50% in the first quarter of 2021

Smartphone sales are on the rise again in the first quarter of 2021. They are up 50% compared to last year.

There is a jump in sales of smartphones worldwide in the first quarter of 2021. Q1 2021 is not yet over but Digitimes is already sharpening its forecasts.

340 million smartphones should find a buyer at the end of the 1st quarter of 2021. This represents an annual increase of 50%.

This spectacular rise would be driven by the performance of iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Chinese brands are also benefiting from Huawei’s situation by capturing new market share through an aggressive pricing policy.

Apple leads the way in sales in 2021

If we look in detail, Apple will sell 60 million iPhones during the first 3 months of the year after the 90 million in Q4 2020. Over the last 6 months, the Cupertino company has recorded 150 million sales, an increase of 38% over the same period one year before.

With such results, Apple remains at the top of the world top without any effort.

Samsung comes in second with 60 to 65 million devices sold between Q4 2020 and Q1 2021. Still penalized by US sanctions, Huawei collapses to 20 million units sold in 6 months.

About the overall sales in 2021, 5G is required with a total of 600 million smartphones sold against 280 million in 2020.

Last year, Huawei, Apple and Samsung accounted for 70% of 5G devices but the situation is expected to change in 2021.

We remain in the domain of predictions. Digitimes forecasts a 10 to 13% increase in sales with a total of 1.4 billion smartphones.
