Small Plane Emergency Landing and Crash at Aero Country Airport – FAA and NTSB Investigation

A small plane crashed into a fence and hit a car at Aero Country Airport when it tried to make an emergency landing Saturday afternoon. The fire department said the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. local time in the 250 block of Aero Country Road in McKinney.

According to the fire department and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a pilot operating a single-engine Lancair IV-P failed to stop at the end of the runway. As a result, the plane broke through the airport fence and collided with a passing car.

An ambulance immediately arrived at the scene of the accident and examined the two passengers in the plane and one in the car. One of the victims was taken to hospital.

“I was on the other side of the plane, closest to the runway, and suddenly I heard a plane land. I looked over and saw a puff of smoke coming from the tires. I saw it was going too fast to stop at the end of the runway,” said Jack Schneider, an aerospace engineer and pilot.

“It went over the fence and then onto the road and then across one lane of traffic and then into the other lane into a passing car,” he said.

Schneider called 911 and ran to the scene with his friend, a firefighter, to help until first responders arrived.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash.
