The novel by the Slovenian writer Vinko Möderndorfer (1958) tells the story of a girl named Nika, who has moved to a new place with her family and started school in the eighth grade at a new school. In fact, although the main character is called Nicholas, but it is a secret. And that’s not the only secret Nick diligently keeps away from his classmates. There is someone in Nick’s life who, in her opinion, should definitely not meet her new friends.

“Heart in the Palm” is a story about a teenage girl and her unusual ordinary family. She learns Spanish and fencing, plays the piano, organizes an animal protection day at school and is a little in love. Vinco Meederndorfer has managed to find a way to talk to the reader about a difficult topic – special children – while bringing to the fore topics that are relevant to young people: school and family life, friendship, the emotional world and the desire to be accepted. It is a human story that will touch everyone. Such stories are necessary for us to become an inclusive society and to recognize that we are all different and yet loved and valued.

The author of the book, Vinko Möderndorf, is an extremely versatile and creative person: writer, poet, playwright, film and theater director. The drama of “Heart in the Palm” (original name – “Kit na plaži”) for teenage audiences has also been staged at the Ljubljana Puppet Theater.
