Slovak Players Shine in the Weekend Matches of AHL

The weekend portion of 14 matches of the overseas AHL also brought a rich Slovak participation in the form of six players from Saturday to Sunday. Šimon Nemec returned to the ice after an injury, Samuel Kňažko also played the first game of the new season. Even this time, however, the Slovak track did not go without an accurate hit or at least a point entry.

The game day started with a matchup in European time between the Calgary Wranglers and the Colorado Eagles. Traditionally, the Slovak striker started in the colors of Calgary Martin Pospíšil, who confirmed his excellent form from the beginning of the season and scored an assist on Connor Zary’s goal against the Avalanche farm, when he was able to find his way in his defensive zone and the young Canadian forward was able to turn the subsequent pass over the bar into a precise shot. That goal later proved to be the game-winner, and Calgary won on home ice by a score of 2-1. For the native of Zvolen, it was already the fifth Canadian point in 5 games played.

The youngest player in the entire league Adam Sýkora was part of the Hartford Wolf Pack lineup, starting at left winger in the third attack alongside Jake Leschyshyn and Brett Berard. In the match against the “penguins” they did not start too happily, when they were already losing 0:4 before the first break. Finally, neither Elson’s nor Brodzinski’s goals helped to gain points, and the duel with the Penguins ended with a 2:4 loss. The former striker of Nitra scored one shot in the match.

Even the defender had a reason to be happy before the meeting itself Simon Nemec. Last year’s draft number two returned after the injury that the Slovak defender sustained in the match on October 13. The duel with the Rochester Americans started in the second defensive pair alongside the already known partner of 30-year-old Tyler Wotherspoon. However, Utica did not follow up on the first win in the new year and lost to the Buffalo Sabers farm with close results 4:5. The native of Liptovský Mikuláš waited until the beginning of the 3rd period for the first Canadian point of the new season, when he scored a secondary assist on a precise shot by Shane Bowers.

After a long wait, another Slovak defender got his chance, this time Samuel Knažko. He replaced the injured Stanislav Svozil in the Cleveland Monsters jersey and grabbed his chance as best he could. In the second period, the native of Trenčín was able to add to the Canadian score with a secondary assist on Nick Blankenburg’s goal. Thanks to the decisive last period, the Slovakian defender enjoyed the victory, helping the result to be 7:3. In addition to the Canadian point, he also finished the match with two “pluses” on his account.

The Coachella Valley Firebirds enjoyed the San Jose Barracuda in the lineup as well Marián Studenič. The Slovak forward participated in the high 8:2 victory with two Canadian points. He scored first for the secondary assist on his team’s second goal, and then took care of the sixth accurate shot of the match after a spot-kick from Connor Carrick. The main star of the match was five-point Max McCormick, who was able to assert himself twice in the match and add 3 assists. He thus became the franchise record for the number of Canadian points in one meeting. It is the American forward who, together with Marián Studenič, is the most productive player of his team in the current AHL season.
