Slight increase in corona infections in Belgium • ‘Don’t just ban German Christmas markets’

In the Australian city of Melbourne, the strict corona measures will remain in force until at least 28 September. Victoria’s Prime Minister Andrews said the number of infections is declining more slowly than expected and the easing planned for next week cannot go ahead. Today Victoria reported 63 new corona infections. That was 725 a month ago.

Melbourne went into lockdown on August 2 because of the number of infections. Melbourne and the state of Victoria are responsible for three quarters of corona infections and 90 percent of corona deaths in Australia.

Due to the strict measures, there is a curfew and a large part of the economy has been shut down. The rules will be relaxed a bit from 14 September. Curfew starts one hour later, at 9:00 PM, and people are allowed to go out for two hours a day instead of the current one hour. Singles may have one regular visitor. If the number of infections drops sufficiently, day care centers, factories and construction sites may reopen two weeks later. The schools will also have limited opening times and five people are allowed to be together outside. A month later, the catering industry, shops and hairdressers could open their doors again and the curfew would be lifted.

Yesterday in Melbourne, about 200 people argued against the lockdown.
