Škoda boss Schäfer: Next year we will introduce a new Fabia. She will be great

The new head of Škoda Auto, Thomas Schäfer, for the corporate web portal Storyboard has confirmed the launch date of the new Fabia. Sales will begin next year.

The current Škoda Fabia can start cutting the meter. According to an official statement from Thomas Schäfer, the new generation should start selling next year. After the end of production of the Citigo model, it will be the smallest Škoda type.

And also a very important model. First of all, it is a car built on the old platform of the previous generation Volkswagen Polo. In the light of emission standards, it therefore has a relatively high consumption and its technical basis does not allow electrification. The new MQB already does, so the novelty could offer mildhybrid powertrains. However, it should also be powered by the already known petrol three-cylinder 1.0 TSI, and a gas version known from Satt Ibiza, for example, can also be expected.

Due to emissions, the launch of the Fabia is to be accelerated. Information about this has appeared before. Last December, former Škoda chief Bernhard Maier told the British Autoexpress. He added that he had already driven one of the prototypes and that he could not wait for the company to launch the car on the market. Maier’s successor Schäfer claims that Fabia will be great. According to Auto.cz, this is to be the first car fully designed by the team around chief designer Oliver Stefani.

According to behind-the-scenes information, the Fabia should also return with a station wagon body. Small family cars are disappearing from the European market and the available station wagon could be a competitive advantage for Škoda.

However, Schäfer also denied in an interview that Škoda should become a cheap brand. “We focus on Korean, Japanese and French manufacturers, these are our main competitors and we will compete with them and together we will use the potential of the brand,” he said.

According to him, Škoda should be an affordable brand. “Skoda cars will always be available – whether we are targeting students, young families or older couples. We will continue to follow this direction. In this way, we will have the opportunity to significantly expand our customer portfolio, “he says in an interview.

According to Schäfer, Škoda is also doing its utmost to minimize the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on its sales results. “The July results even turned out 8% better year-on-year, we were able to significantly increase our market share and August also looks very promising,” he thanked the entire team.
