Škoda also uses ostrich feathers or smart gloves in Kvasiny

The view of the Yeast car factory begins in the welding shop, where up to 1,500 bodies are assembled daily. A large part of the related welding work is performed here by a total of 893 robots.

It produces more than 50 cars per hour on the assembly line, so approximately 1,200 cars of the mentioned models are created here in each of the six days of the week.

In this plant, Škoda automates production and implements new technologies from Industry 4.0. For example, smart gloves in the logistics process occur. On the contrary, the old-fashioned need to use ostrich feathers in the paint shop.

The plant demanded hundreds of millions of investments in connection with the start of production of the Superb iV, a plug-in hybrid variant that accompanied the common versions after the facelift. The first specialty is already at the beginning of the production process, in the welding shop. This is because the floor is different for the Superb iV. Both in shape and stiffness – it had to be reinforced.

The changes are related, as usual, to the addition of a high voltage battery. At some point, the movement of the chassis frames branches; those for plug-in hybrids go to the place where the battery is placed in them by means of a manual manipulator. Then, plug-in hybrids with conventional motorizations come together again to split at the end of the process, when the rechargeable trucks are waiting for specific finishing work.

Superb frees up space

In recent weeks, the plant in Kvasiny has come to the public’s attention mainly in connection with the relocation of the top Superb model, which will be used by Volkswagen Passat in Bratislava in the next generation from 2023.

The reason is simple, the capacity of Czech plants is already insufficient, including that in Kvasiny, and there is a need to make room for large-volume SUV models, but it will also enable the production of a new-generation Fabia Combi model.

“We welcome the decision regarding the occupancy planning of the group plants. At Škoda Auto, we will acquire additional capacities in the Czech Republic that are urgently needed for our growth plan. This will create the conditions for further expansion of our brand while maintaining high profitability, “explains the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Škoda Auto Thomas Schäfer.
